Powering up for #Empower17




Next weekend kicks off the ASCD National Conference in Anaheim California-- and I for one, am really excited to attend an educator and a presenter. I will participate as a panelist in "Leadership is a TeamSport" with some truly amazing women--all of whom I have never met in person.This fact is poignant; it demonstrates the power of a Professional Learning Network.

Pinch me! I feel so fortunate to have crossed paths with Lisa Dabbs @teachwithsoul, Jen Hogan @Jennifer_Hogan and Deb Campbell @debralcamp through Twitter. These ladies, along with other incredible women, have been a sounding board, cheerleader and an inspiration to me through our WEL Voxer group.  We talk about how important it is to reach beyond the walls of your school and create a network of progressive, enthusiastic and positive educators who can collaborate, inspire and challenge one another to remain relevant. #Empower17 is giving us the opportunity to showcase just that!

The topic of leadership and the challenges that come along with it can cause school leaders to feel isolated and  disconnected. We will be discussing ways that all educators can use technology to collaborate, support  and motivate each other. Our focus will be highlighting different apps that connect us with other passionate educators. If you are attending Empower17, please come be part of this very important discussion. My feet have finally landed and are now firmly planted eager to begin a new chapter. It’s been a whirl wind of excitement and change. After 25 years of teaching, I am embarking on a new career. Languages of Learning

I am a big fan of the 5 Languages of Love philosophy! When we take the time to explore and analyze how it is that we express to others that we care for them, and just as important, we understand the manner in which they express their feelings for us, there is harmony. People are diverse; they have different ways in doing things and expressing themselves—loving and learning are no different. The five languages of love according to Gary Chapman are: Gift giving Quality time Physical touch Acts of service Words of affirmation Recently, I was facilitating a workshop on Creating a Cultural Responsive School and Classroom. Why I Tribe!

Why I tribe! That question was the theme for last month’s #compelledtribe challenge to the amazing group of educators who blog. My immediate reaction to this question was “why would you not tribe?” Developing a network of passionate people who help to elevate the education profession seems like a no brainer, but so many people go it alone—and I’m not sure why.  Personally for me, I am sure footed in why I surround myself with others. I tribe because: I want to remain relevant in my craft I want to be influenced by other positive educators I want to impact education in a positive way I want to share resources and ideas and I like when my tribe does the same. I want to connect people together  I want to grow in my pedagogy So, again....why not tribe? We are better together.
